An Introduction

South Moor Vets comprises a group of long-established practices and practitioners in the South Hams that have amalgamated in the last couple of years. Historically, mixed practice in Devon has meant that individual vets treat all the species including farm animals, equine and pets, but in recent years each department has become more specialised, and the increase in the size of the practice has allowed the vets to concentrate on their area of interest.

There are 16 vets in the practice, supported by veterinary nurses, trainee nurses, receptionists and managers. Of the vets, six are predominantly dealing with pets, three equine and seven the farm animals. There is a wealth of experience in the practice, with nine of the vets being qualified for more than 20 years! This knowledge base is continually being expanded and updated by attendance at courses: British Small Animal, British Equine and the World Small Animal, Veterinary Association Congresses have all been attended in 2006, as well as courses in Orthopaedics, Opthalmology, Feline Medicine, Feline Emergencies, Dermatology and Neurology. We currently have a vet enrolled on a modular course leading to a Certificate in Equine Practice, and another will start on the Certificate in Small Animal Practice in 2007.

Our size means that we can offer many appointment times daily, we have access to a wide range of equipment (see Services), and we have at least two vets and one of our veterinary nursing staff on call out of hours. With the practice split between the three branches, however, we would also hope to maintain a local, personal and caring service at each site.
